Norton Shores chief: Police chase ended before deadly crash

NORTON SHORES, Mich. (WOOD) — An innocent passenger in a vehicle was killed in a crash moments after police ended their chase with the suspect, according to Norton Shores Police Chief Jon Gale.

It happened around 11:15 a.m. at East Broadway Avenue and Huizenga Street in Norton Shores.

Gale said a sergeant was pursuing a suspect in a retail theft at a Meijer store. The officer had stopped the suspect at Getty Street near Norton, but the suspect continued on, Gale said.

As they approached Broadway Avenue, the sergeant ended the chase, based on the weather conditions, time of day and seriousness of the alleged crime, according to the police chief.

Gale said the suspect then turned onto Broadway and hit a vehicle at Huizenga Street. Two people were inside the second vehicle; one of them died, the police chief said. The second passenger and suspect were also injured, police said.

Gale said it appeared the suspect had stolen the vehicle used in the chase.

Police have taped off the crash scene. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area.
