Break-in suspect shot, injured by officers

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — A suspect was shot and wounded by  officers following a break-in and car chase in the Battle Creek area  early Sunday.

The situation started at 11:50 p.m. Saturday, when Calhoun County  sheriff’s deputies were called on a report of a home invasion in the  14000 block of J Drive in Marshall Township.

“(The suspect had) thrown a rock through the window and gained entry  into the house and was taking firearms from inside,” Calhoun County  Sheriff’s Office Lt. Dan Latta said.

The suspect, who Michigan State Police say is the ex-boyfriend of the  homeowner, was apparently after personal property, including guns. He  was confronted by and struggled with the homeowner, at which time a shot  was fired into the ceiling of the home. The homeowner was not injured,  but the suspect took off with two guns.

Deputies later spotted the suspect’s van on the Emmett Street bridge  and attempted to pull it over, but authorities said the suspect took  off. Police say the suspect led them on a chase that ended just after  midnight at the intersection of Elm Street and Van Buren Avenue in  Battle Creek.

“As soon as the driver came to a stop, he exited the vehicle and  began firing rounds at the police vehicles, striking both of them,” Lt.  Latta said. “We’re fortunate that … three of the rounds that hit one of  our vehicles didn’t penetrate the vehicle and injure our deputy.”

Deputies and troopers returned fire.

“I know dozens of shots were fired,” Latta said.

The suspect was hit twice: once in the hip and once in the upper body.

The 47-year-old suspect was taken to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo,  where he is in stable condition. Police say his injuries are not  considered life-threatening.
