FLINT, Mich. (WOOD) — The FBI is investigating the stabbing of an airport police officer at the Bishop International Airport in Flint as a possible act of terrorism, NBC News reports.
Michigan State Police say Lt. Jeff Neville was stabbed in the neck while at the airport Wednesday morning. He is out of surgery and in stable condition, troopers said.
uthorities say a person of interest in the stabbing is in custody and being questioned. NBC News reports that federal investigators are looking into the incident as a possible act of terrorism.
NBC News is also reporting that the Canadian born suspect yelled “Allahu Akbar,” the Arabic phrase for “God is great,” before stabbing the officer multiple times.
The FBI said in a news release Wednesday afternoon that investigators are aware of the reports, but say it’s too early to determine whether or not this was an act of terrorism.
A source told WOOD TV8’s NBC affiliate WEYI that the suspect tried to buy a gun but was denied then bought a knife.
The Bishop International Airport reopened around 4 p.m. Wednesday after being closed for several hours.
Police officers are stationed around the Flint City Hall “in an abundance caution,” but it remains open for business, according to a City of Flint news release.
MSP asked residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to authorities.
The FBI said investigators have no specific, credible information that there is a threat to the Flint area.
