GRPD: Man shot in abdomen; suspect in custody

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids police are investigating  after a man sustained life-threatening injuries in a shooting on Tuesday  evening.

The shooting happened around 6:35 p.m. in the 800 block of Ballard  Street SE, east of Eastern Avenue, in the city’s Oakdale neighborhood.  The Grand Rapids Police Department says officers were called there on a  report of a man down and arrived to find the victim.

GRPD says the 45-year-old man was shot in the abdomen. He was rushed to a local hospital and underwent surgery.

Witnesses told police that the man was shot after getting out of a  vehicle. Five shots were fired, GRPD said, but it’s not clear how many  of those struck the man.

Two people found in a nearby home were taken into police custody: One  is a suspect and the other a person of interest. One of them appeared  to smile as they were loaded into a police cruiser.

A 3-year-old was also in the home where police found the suspect and person of interest.

Police did not release the names of the victim or suspect Tuesday  evening. It’s unclear what, if any, connection there is between them.

People in the area after the shooting happened were visibly upset. It’s unclear if they were connected to the victim or suspect.
