MUSKEGON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The older brother of a 15-year-old who was shot and killed outside of a Muskegon Township bowling alley is being held in connection to the death.
The Muskegon County Prosecutor’s Office said a charging decision in the case was likely to come down sometime Wednesday.
Officials on Tuesday identified the victim as Davion Hewlett. Officers found him suffering from a single gunshot wound around 6:55 p.m. Monday outside Northway Lanes at 1751 Evanston Ave. Police said Davion was shot while inside a vehicle and was able to climb out of the car before collapsing. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died.
Witnesses told police two people left the bowling alley’s parking lot after the shooting. The prosecutor’s office said an officer chased one of the people, who was armed.
The chase ended near Shonat Street and Southland Drive, where the person pointed a gun at himself for about an hour and threatened to kill himself, according to the prosecutor’s office. Police negotiators eventually convinced him to drop his weapon and he was taken into custody without further incident.
A second person was also taken into custody on possible unrelated charges.
The two people remained in police custody Tuesday as the prosecutor’s office considered charges. The prosecutor’s office said police were treating the investigation as an accidental shooting, but a final determination has not been made.
