G.R. Public Schools Settle Lawsuit Filed Against The District

Mlive reports G.R.P.S. has agreed to settle a lawsuit filed by a black  student who says he was repeatedly subjected to racial slurs by a white classmate, records show. The parties have reached a confidential settlement that awaits approval by a federal judge, records show. The black student, identified in court records by his initials, was  "openly and often" called "n-----" by the white student during the last  school year, his attorney, Nakisha Chaney, wrote in a brief in support  of the settlement filed in U.S. District Court. She said the boy's mother, Sumayyah Waver, repeatedly complained to  Sherwood Park Global Studies Academy without sufficient response. The district's attorney, Craig Noland, contended that school  officials "completely resolved and addressed the problems" between the  two students. He would not reveal terms of the proposed settlement but said it  allows the district to avoid litigation costs of defending the lawsuit. In court records, the school district denied being deliberately  indifferent to racial slurs, or that it discriminated or retaliated  against the black student.
