Woman Pleads No Contest in GR Stabbing

On Tuesday, Kawonda Mendez pleaded no contest to the August 2016 stabbing of her then-boyfriend, Scott Morton. Mendez, 36, was accused of stabbing Morton to death in an apartment after an argument. Mendez was charged with murder in the second degree. After pleading no contest, she faces a maximum term of life in prison. The prosecuting attorney in the case recommended a 10 to 15-year sentence.

Grand Rapids Police responded to a call of a felonious assault at Globe Apartments, located at 315 Commerce Avenue SW. Mendez faces sentencing on Thursday, April 13.
