GR Cancels Public Hearing on Household Pet Limit

The City of Grand Rapids has cancelled a scheduled March 28 Public Hearing to discuss a proposed Animal Ordinance amendment. The proposed ordinance change would have limited the number of cats and dogs residents could keep in a home.

City Commissioner Dave Shaffer requested that the City pause action on the ‘Resolution to consider amending Section 9 of Chapter 155 of the Grand Rapids City Code, “Animals”’ based on initial feedback the City has received from residents and animal welfare groups.

“I’ve asked that the item not be included on the March 28 City Commission agenda because of community input that we’ve received suggesting ideas and revisions to the ordinance that may better address the issues around hoarding and care of animals. An ordinance simply limiting the number of pets may not be best solution.” No date has been set for this item to be reintroduced to the City Commission.
