Michigan Churches to become Immigrant Sanctuaries

This afternoon, faith leaders in the Kalamazoo area are announcing that they have joined the movement to keep immigrant families together by providing sanctuary for those threatened with deportation.

First Congregational Church is one of several involved in the movement. They're being joined by Vanguard Edison Church and The River church.

About 50 church leaders gathered last month in Dearborn to figure out how to become sanctuaries and understand the legal ramifications of the decision. Many churches and synagogues have already declared their congregation as sanctuary houses of worship.

Michigan United executive director Ryan Bates says civil disobedience is necessary when the overall system is unjust.
