G.R.P.S. To Start Classes Before Labor Day

More and more school districts are deciding to beginning fall classes before the Labor Day holiday. The Grand Rapids Public Schools joined that growing list today, with a letter sent out to parents notifying them of the change. The letter is from the superintendent.....

I am writing to share information about the new start of school date for 2017-2018. The first day of school for the 2017-18 school year will be Monday, August 28, 2017.The change to a pre-Labor Day start is being made for several reasons. First, it aligns us with other districts throughout the county and to our college/university partners. Second, it helps to accommodate the additional instructional days per year that are required by the State of Michigan. Finally, it allows us more flexibility with breaks throughout the year, including restoring winter break to two weeks. We are continuing to negotiate the remainder of the calendar with our union leaders. As soon as an agreed upon calendar is available, we will share it with you.

Sincerely,

Teresa Weatherall Neal, M.Ed.Superintendent
