A Kentwood City Commissioner is resigning after being accused of making a threatening phone call to a constituent over a street project. Steven Redmond's letter of resignation from his at-large seat is on the Commission's agenda for its 7 p.m. meeting Tuesday, Feb. 21. Redmond won't be in attendance at the Tuesday meeting. He submitted a one-sentence letter of resignation Monday, Feb. 13, Kepley said. The commission will take a vote to accept the letter at its Feb. 21 meeting, and will make a motion to vacate his seat at its next City Commission meeting. That will spark a 45-day period in which the commission has to appoint someone to fill the seat, Kepley said. The resignation comes nearly two months after Redmond pleaded not guilty in Grand Rapids' 61st District Court to a misdemeanor charge in the case of the phone call.Redmond allegedly anonymously called a Kentwood resident Oct. 19, 2016, and made threats over the city's plans to make changes to Wing Avenue. The resident had previously voiced objections to the project. He is charged with one count of malicious use of telecommunications, a misdemeanor that carries a maximum sentence of six months in jail and/or a fine of $1,000.The court case is still ongoing. Redmond's non-jury trial is scheduled to begin 2 p.m. March 8, according to court records.Redmond was first appointed to the City Commission in March 2015 and was elected to a four-year term in November 2015.
