GVSU Sexual Assaults Being Reviewed

Mlive reports, a new Criminal Case Review Team has formed to look at rape allegations on or near Grand Valley State University's Allendale campus. The move comes three months after an MLive investigation found that many recent sex assaults being disclosed to GVSU staff were slow to reach police, and some never were forwarded to the Ottawa County Prosecutor for possible criminal charges. The team met for the first time Jan. 12 and plans to meet monthly. Its members include law enforcement from Grand Valley and the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department, an assistant county prosecutor, and the victim advocate from GVSU's Women's Center. It was formed after sharp criticism from Ottawa County Prosecutor Ron Frantz, who last fall accused GVSU of having a policy that discouraged prompt reporting of sex assaults, undermining authorities' ability to gather evidence and prosecute the perpetrators. He said assault reports from GVSU students were trickling into police and his office weeks and sometimes months after an incident occurred.
