Former NFL quarterbacks Boomer Esiason and Phil Simms will no longer contribute to CBS Sports' long running football program The NFL Today amid a shakeup.

CBS Sports announced Esiason and Simms' departures in a press release revealing that NFL quarterback Matt Ryan -- who officially announced his retirement last week -- would be moving from the in-game broadcast booth to the studio show joining James Brown, Bill Cowher and J.J. Watt for the 2024 NFL season.

“Phil and Boomer set the standard of excellence for NFL analysts,” said David Berson, President and CEO of CBS Sports. “We are so grateful for their immeasurable contributions to CBS Sports. We genuinely thank them for being incredible teammates and for their passion, dedication and commitment to elevating CBS Sports’ NFL coverage every season.”

Esiason, 63, a former NFL MVP, and Simms, 68, a two-time Super Bowl champion who had previously served as the network's lead NFL analyst prior to the hiring of fellow former NFL quarterback Tony Romo, both contributed to CBS Sports' NFL coverage for more than 20 years. Esiason will continue his role with his CBS Sports local New York radio show despite his departure from The NFL Today.

Ryan contributed as an NFL game analyst last season, though not officially announcing his retirement from his playing career until last week.

“Matt had an outstanding first year at CBS Sports, excelling as both a studio and game analyst,” said Berson. “He is the consummate team player and a Hall of Fame person. We love the chemistry he has with the studio crew and we’re excited to see him entertain NFL fans and share his passion, insight and perspective alongside JB, Nate, Coach and JJ.”

“I grew up watching The NFL Today so I’m honored to join this iconic show and hope to continue the high standard set by Phil, Boomer and others before me,” Ryan said. “I am thankful for this exciting new opportunity and can’t wait to get started with my new teammates.”

Ryan ranks in the top 10 among all NFL quarterbacks in career passing yards (62,792), touchdowns (381), completions (5,551) and attempts (8,464). The former Boston College standout led the Falcons to a Super Bowl appearance during his NFL MVP season in 2016 and six playoff berths during his 14 seasons with the franchise before being traded to the Indianapolis Colts in March 2022.

Ryan threw for 3,057 yards, 14 touchdowns and 13 interceptions during his lone season in Indianapolis.
