One hundred years of chili dogs. One hundred years of familiar faces, family traditions and hometown memories. And one very big birthday celebration!

G&L, a Muskegon original since 1926, is inviting the community to celebrate its 100th anniversary on Thursday, October 29, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at its Holton Road location (1705 Holton Road). The celebration will feature $1 hot dogs and chili dogs, birthday cake, giveaways, a giant birthday card for signature, and appearances by local and state dignitaries.

$1.00 hot dogs and chili dogs will be available from 11:30am - 1:30pm at the other 3 locations as well (limit to 5 hot dogs per person).

For G&L, reaching 100 years is about much more than a birthday. It’s a celebration of the community that has supported the restaurant for a century—and the generations of Muskegon residents who have made G&L part of their lives.

Founded in 1926 by Greek immigrants George Baldas and Louis Coredas, G&L began as a local sandwich shop and grew into one of Muskegon’s most enduring restaurant traditions. Through changing times and generations of customers, G&L has remained true to its roots, continuing to serve its original recipes, handed down from one generation to the next. These time-honored recipes, along with a commitment to quality food and friendly, hometown service, have helped make G&L a beloved part of Muskegon’s history.

For a century, G&L has been more than a place to grab a meal. It has been part of everyday life in Muskegon—a place where families gather, friends reconnect and generations return for the familiar flavors they have always loved. Its story is inseparable from the story of the community it calls home.

“Reaching 100 years in Muskegon is something truly special,” said Pete Johnson, co-owner of G&L. “Our wonderful staff and customers have made G&L what it is today. Some of the G&L Team have worked her for over 25 years! Many families have been coming here for generations, enjoying the same original recipes that have been passed down through the years. We’re incredibly grateful for their loyalty and support, and this celebration is our way of saying thank you to the community that has supported us for 100 years.”

Trip Johnson, co-owner of G&L, added, “G&L is part of Muskegon’s story, and Muskegon is part of ours. We want everyone to come out, enjoy a $1 hot dog or chili dog, share some birthday cake and celebrate with us. Whether you’ve been coming to G&L for decades or are making your first visit, you’re part of this celebration.”

A Birthday Celebration for the Whole Community

The October 29 event will bring together G&L customers, employees, community members and dignitaries to recognize a century of local history and look ahead to the future. Guests can enjoy $1 hot dogs and chili dogs (5 max per person), birthday cake, giveaways and the opportunity to add their names and birthday wishes to G&L’s giant birthday card.

The celebration will also recognize G&L’s 100-year milestone with a signed decree acknowledging G&L Day from Governor Gretchen Whitmer, along with recognition from local dignitaries.

Throughout 2026, G&L has marked its centennial with special promotions and celebrations honoring the people, traditions and original recipes that have helped make it a Muskegon favorite. The October gathering will bring that yearlong celebration to a fitting high point: right here at home, with the community that made it possible.

100 Years Strong—and the Story Continues

As G&L begins its second century, its commitment remains the same: preserving the original recipes that started it all, serving the food generations of customers have come to love, and welcoming the community that has made G&L a true Muskegon tradition for 100 years.

After a century, G&L’s story is about more than longevity. It’s about staying true to its roots, honoring the traditions passed down through generations and continuing to serve the hometown that has supported it for 100 years.
