KDPS look for man who stabbed and robbed deacon

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety is looking for a man who robbed and stabbed a deacon from a local Catholic parish.

The incident happened on November 5 near Saint Mary Catholic Church.

The suspect approached 71-year-old Joe Schmitt and demanded his wallet.

Schmitt said he didn't have one and was thrown to the ground and stabbed.

Someone in a car that was passing by stopped and called police.

Schmitt is a deacon at St. Thomas More Catholic Church.
