MSU's Engler testifies before Congress Tuesday

WASHINGTON (WOOD) —  Michigan State University interim president John Engler will testify before members of Congress Tuesday afternoon, in the wake of the Larry Nassar sex assault scandal at MSU.

He'll be speaking before the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety, Insurance and Data Security in a presentation titled "Strengthening and Empowering U.S. Amateur Athletes: Moving Forward with Solutions.”

USA Gymnastics President Kerry Perry and U.S. Olympic Committee acting CEO Susanne Lyons will also be fielding questions at the hearing, which will be livestreamed on woodtv.com.

Engler's appearance comes after contentious board meetings and continued calls for his resignation.

Earlier this month, he told 24 Hour News 8's Lynsey Mukomel he won't step down and instead wants to focus on moving the university forward while trustees begin a search for a permanent president.

Watch 24 hour News at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. for a report on what happens at the hearing.
