Man's body recovered from Dumont Lake

MONTEREY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A man's body was pulled from a lake north of Allegan Sunday evening, hours after he fell off a Jet Ski and went under the water.

Authorities started searching Dumont Lake, which is on the border of Allegan and Monterey townships, around 3:45 p.m. The Allegan County Sheriff's Office said divers were hampered by limited visibility and water temperatures around 40 degrees.

More than four hours after they started looking, crews found the man's body in about 35 feet of water.

Authorities identified the man as 47-year-old Gregory Troy Williams of Grand Rapids. The investigation revealed that Williams was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident.

The sheriff's office said Williams was a passenger on the Jet Ski and was knocked off when a wave hit. When the driver of the Jet Ski looked back, he didn't see the man.

Authorities say Williams may have survived if he had been wearing his life jacket.

"Obviously the biggest thing is make sure, no matter how good of a swimmer you are, whether you can swim or can't swim, make sure you wear your personal water vest," sheriff's office Sgt. Ken DeVries said.
