DNR: Wildfire in Newaygo County contained

BROOKS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A large wildfire in Newaygo County is considered contained Wednesday, but state officials are still monitoring the area.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources confirmed the wildfire east of Newaygo that spread through the woods of the Manistee National Forest is contained. Crews will be out around 7 a.m. Wednesday to check out the area.

The fire west of Bills Lake near M-82 broke out around 6 p.m. Tuesday and had grown to some 250 acres within the next four hours. It scorched an area about 1.1 miles long and .3 miles wide. It took fire crews nearly eight hours to contain the wildfire.
