Relationship stress before double murder-suicide

HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — An ongoing family dispute led to an apparent double murder-suicide at a home north of Holland Sunday, authorities say.

Capt. Mark Bennett of the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office said Monday that Phouthone "Loy" Kaiyarath, 43, is the suspected shooter.

Authorities believe Kaiyarath shot his child’s mother Latthida Kommana, 34, and his ex-brother-in-law Thomas Rattanavong, 51, multiple times inside a bedroom at the family's home before turning the gun on himself.

"That sequence of events happened quite rapidly," Bennett said.

Investigators say the shooting appears to have been motivated by family issues. The three were allegedly arguing about the problems before the shooting.

"There was some indication that the stress was overs some relationships within the family," Bennett said. "We're still piecing that together to try to see if any one event precipitated the stress that brought on this situation."
