Hearing scheduled before 2007 murder retrial

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A woman who was convicted of murdering her landlord and then granted a new trial is expected back in a Kent County courtroom Monday for a hearing.

In 2015, Robin Root was convicted of first-degree murder in the December 2007 death of Janna Kelly and sentenced to life in prison.

Root was moved Friday from the Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility south of Ann Arbor to the Kent County jail in preparation for the hearing.

The Michigan Court of Appeals vacated her conviction in September of last year. The court decided she was entitled to a new trial in part because investigators didn't read her the Miranda rights until after she confessed to accidentally killing Kelly.
