Suspect in standoff threatening suicide

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A standoff is underway on Grand Rapids' southeast side, where police say a man wanted for possession of stolen property has threatened to harm himself.

The incident started around 1:15 p.m. at a duplex in the 4300 block of Dawes Court SE, which is in the area of Plymouth Avenue and 44th Street.

"We're committed to staying out here for quite some time, as long as it takes for a peaceful resolution," Grand Rapids Police Department Sgt. Cathy Williams said. "We've been out here since a little after 1 today. We've been in constant communication with the suspect since that time. That's a very good sign. We're committed to keeping that communication line open, despite the rain, despite if it gets dark, we're still going to make sure this has a peaceful resolution on our end."

GRPD Capt. Geoff Collard said the situation started when Kent County sheriff's deputies went to the home to investigate a tip that the 30-year-old suspect may be concealing stolen property.
