Thousands without power day after MI storm

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Thousands of Consumers Energy customers in West Michigan are without power after a spring storm brought strong winds, rain, snow and ice to the region.

Consumers said more than 118,000 customers overall were affected. As of about 10:30 a.m. Monday, the number of Consumers Energy customers statewide without service was approximately 7,771.

Here's the breakdown of outages in West Michigan by county:

  • Allegan County: 451
  • Barry County: 195
  • Calhoun County: 1,254
  • Ionia County: 324
  • Ottawa County: 186

Consumers spokesman Roger Morgenstern said power should be back to everyone by 11 p.m. Monday. Additional crews from Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia are in the state to aid in restoration.

Great Lakes Energy said Sunday afternoon it had restored power to 20,000 customers and was working to get service back to about 670 customers in several counties, including Allegan.

The storm also caused property damage and closed roads: A tree and power pole fell onto a car in Grand Rapids’ Eastown neighborhood. Additionally, Fuller Avenue at Knapp Street in Grand Rapids was closed Sunday due to leaning power lines. It's unclear when it will reopen, but drivers are advised to avoid the area while Consumers Energy crews work to repair the lines.

Consumers cautions you should never approach a downed power line and should assume a downed line is a power line rather than a telephone or cable line. People who come across a downed line should stay at least 25 feet away from it or anything it is touching, and call 911 and Consumers at 800.477.5050 immediately.
