Senior bingo could get boot after decades

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — For longer than its players can clearly remember, Tuesdays at the Westside Complex have been reserved for senior bingo.

“Some of these seniors, the only day they get out and can meet other people is here on Tuesday,” said Norman Szubinski, who’s been running – and calling – the bingo game for more than a decade.

But Szubinski believes seniors have been playing Tuesday bingo at 215 Straight Ave NW in Grand Rapids for nearly four decades, starting when the facility was built in the mid-to-late 70s.

“It’s like family and we look forward to Tuesdays,” explained 83-year-old June Downer. “Never make an appointment on Tuesdays because Tuesday is senior bingo day.”

One player said it’s the only recreation she has. Another said the game helps her mentally and physically.
