Road, power crews prepare for spring storm

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — As a spring storm takes aim at West Michigan, road crews who had switched from winter weather to summer maintenance mode were busy reinstalling the cold weather equipment on their trucks Friday.

“Not a scramble, but certainly not something out of the ordinary either,” said Jerry Byrne, Director of Maintenance for the Kent County Road Commission.

Byrne’s crews spent part of the day putting salt spreaders back together and on the rigs. It was not the kind of task they plan for in the spring.

But then again, this is Michigan.

“It is April, we're looking at the forecast,” Byrne said. “So we're starting to put a few of the sanders back on that we had taken off so we could efficiently do some pavement repairs.”

By the end of the day, at least 50 trucks in the fleet will have scraper blades and spreaders, with the ability to put both sand and salt on the roadway. Another 30 will just have scrapers.
