MSP warns against bubble wrapping US-131 overpass

BYRON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A Facebook event to bubble wrap the battered 100th Street bridge above US-131 in Byron Township is sparking a warning from Michigan State Police.

In a Thursday news release, MSP said it’s “strongly advising against this event and strict enforcement action will be taken if necessary.”

Details for the Saturday event popped up on Facebook shortly after a hauler hit the overpass late last month. It was the fifth time that’s happened this year.

“The 100th St. overpass needs our help. Any donations of bubble wrap and tape are appreciated,” the event post reads.

The bridge is lower than most in Michigan, but Michigan Department of Transportation spokesman John Richards has said it hasn’t led to any problems for years. MDOT also noted the bridge height is listed in trucker manuals.

While over 300 people have signed up on Facebook as “going” to the noontime event, it’s unclear how many people actually plan on attending.
