Dashcam: How authorities stopped IN suspects

PAW PAW, Mich. (WOOD) — New video shows how a police chase that started in Indiana came to a dramatic end in Allegan County last month.

The dashcam video released Wednesday by the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office shows the last leg of the March 14 chase, which started in Indiana and ended along M-40 between Gobles and Allegan.

Authorities from Indiana were initially chasing 44-year-old Anthony Blatz and his wife, but dropped off at the state line. The pair was later spotted in Cass County, but deputies lost sight of them. They were sighted a third time in Van Buren County, after which their vehicle crashed along M-40 near Paw Paw and they took off.

That's where the dashcam video begins. It shows officers talking about where to search for the suspects. A short time later, a deputy can be seen taking a K-9 out of a cruiser to help in the search.

Michigan State Police 1st Lt. Chuck Christensen said Blatz called friends he knew from Indiana to pick them up. A short time later, a trooper spotted a Jeep with Indiana plates and pulled it over. That’s when one of the suspects pushed the driver out of the car and sped away.

The video shows the suspect drive off, heading north on M-40. The chase, which lasted nearly 10 minutes, reached speeds of 121 mph at times.
