GRPD investigating deputy-involved shooting

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – The suspect in an deputy-involved  shooting in Grand Rapids is in critical condition after being shot in  the chest, Grand Rapids police said.

GRPD Captain Eric Payne said the shooting involved a Kent County  sheriff’s deputy. It happened while police were attempting to take two  people into custody around 4 a.m. Sunday at the Burton’s Landing  apartment complex in the 3800 block of Whispering Way Drive SE.

Payne said that as part of a multi-jurisdictional drug investigation,  Kent County Tactical Team members were executing a search warrant at an  apartment building in the complex. At some point, while the warrant was  being executed, the deputy shot a male suspect, whose name has not been  released, in the chest.

Authorities would not go into detail about what exactly led up to the  shooting, and would not say if the suspect was armed or if he attacked  the deputy.

Payne would not elaborate on the drug investigation or how the injured suspect was involved.

No deputies were hurt in the incident.
