GRPD: No one injured in gunfire exchange with suspect

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Grand Rapid Police say no one was shot during an exchange of gunfire with an 18-year-old suspect on Tuesday afternoon.

GRPD Chief Eric Winstrom says a senior officer and an officer in training were patrolling the area of Adams Street SE and Blaine Avenue SE around 1:40 p.m. when they saw someone who they knew to be a suspect walking in the area. Winstrom says they called out and asked to speak to the man when he turned and fire shots at the officers. Officers returned shots.

Officers reported a description of the suspect over radio and backup units were able to find the suspect a few blocks away and took him into custody.

Police were able to recover the gun that he used as well. Winstrom says they will run ballistics tests to determine if the gun has been used in a crime.

Michigan State Police also responded to the scene and are investigating. The two officers that fired shots have been placed on administrative leave, as is protocol.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
