Annual SHOES program giveaway begins Wednesday in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A nonprofit organization in Grand Rapids that supports the basic needs of the community will provide a new pair of back-to-school athletic shoes to elementary students in West Michigan this week.

The three-day SHOES program begins Wednesday at DeVos Place convention center.

Dr. Ashley Lubbers is executive director of In The Image. She told West Michigan's Morning News they will be providing the shoes to about 4,100 local students.

"Our program supports students kindergarten through fifth grade in Kent County. So, those are really the basic qualifications. It's a community event for the community by the community. And we're excited to serve whoever comes in. It is appointment-based," Dr. Lubbers told WOOD Radio.

She noted it can be a confidence booster for kids, in terms of fitting in fashion-wise.

"It's not just about getting them a brand new pair of shoes that they can use for gym, class or whatever else they have going. It's also about that confidence and the excitement about back to school. School might not be real exciting if you feel like you're different," Lubbers said.

In the Image also has partnered with Storehouse of Community Resources to provide backpacks full of supplies.

They are still in need of volunteer support.

"So, come in and be the person who's giving a kid that pair of shoes," Lubbers said. "It's really exciting. It's fun to do. And lastly, we need financial support."
