KCSO: Man in critical condition after firing at deputies

GAINES TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The Kent County Sheriff's Office says deputies shot and injured a man during a standoff in the Cutlerville area Tuesday morning.

Undersheriff Bryan Muir says the incident began at a home on Fontenelle Street SE near S. Division Avenue around 9 a.m. Deputies were called to the scene on reports of domestic assault and a 66-year-old man threatening residents and neighbors with a gun.

Muir says when deputies arrived on scene the man pointed the gun at them. The man went back inside the home and deputies attempted to contact him with a loudspeaker.

The man left the home again and pointed a gun at deputies. Officials tried to talk with the man until he began firing multiple rounds at them. Deputies returned fire and injured the man.

He remains in critical condition as of Tuesday night.

Two deputies are on administrative leave as part of standard procedure.

The Wyoming Police Department is taking over the investigation.
