Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker announced that he will not retry former police officer Christopher Schurr in the death of Patrick Lyoya.
During a news conference Thursday, Becker said he did not come to that decision lightly. A jury previously deadlocked in Schurr’s case and was unable to decide whether to convict or acquit him of second-degree murder, or, as a second option, manslaughter.
Back in April of 2022, Schurr claimed self-defense in the killing of 26-year-old Patrick Lyoya when they got into a physical altercation during a traffic stop.
The trial got underway on April 28, and ended on May 8 in a deadlock, where the judge then declared a mistrial.
