Downed transformers caused oil sheen on Grand River

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy says an oil sheen on the Grand River in Grand Rapids was caused by downed transformers.

The oil sheen was reported on Tuesday morning near the Grand Rapids, Grandville, Walker borders.

EGLE and Consumers Energy say several transformers were blown during the storms on Sunday and released oil into storm drains.

The oil does not contain toxic chemicals that are known to cause cancer.
