A suspect is facing charges after a shooting that happened in Alpine Township early Saturday morning.
Forty-two-year-old Gilberto Hernandez-Mendez was arraigned on 11 counts on Monday including open murder, attempted homicide and multiple weapons offenses.
Kent County Sheriff's deputies were called to a home on Tabor Road NW around 2:30 a.m. Saturday after a neighbor reported hearing a loud, suspicious sound. A victim called police shortly after and reported a shooting had occurred in their home.
Police arrived on scene and found a 30-year-old woman with serious injuries, a 36-year-old woman with serious injuries and 56-year-old Norma Ramirez-Martinez deceased. A adult male and toddler were also on the scene but were uninjured. Both injured women were taken to local hospitals and are now in stable condition.
A preliminary investigation determined the incident began as a domestic dispute.
The suspect was not on the scene when police arrived. Deputies discovered he had fled the scene and were able to track him down and take him in to custody around 7 a.m.
Officials say the suspect was previously deported and the case has been referred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Removal Operations offices.
