Nonprofit helping students get interested in esports

A local nonprofit is helping students get into esports and competitive video gaming as part of an anti-violence initiative.

The City of Grand Rapids is granting Jump Ahead LC3 funding to help students learn more about the growing field and play.

Grand Rapid Public Schools currently has six esports labs and the nonprofit is in talks with the district to use the labs to engage students in game design, content creation and other skills.

Jump Ahead LC3 chief energy officer Dee Jones says the funding will go toward an Esports competition, prize money for students and paying volunteers.
