New state law aims to keep plow drivers, public safe

A new state law is in place to keep snowplow drivers and the public safe.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a bill into law this summer requiring drivers stay at least 200 feet away from a snowplow that is actively plowing or treating roads.

Kent County Road Commission Managing Director Jerry Byrne says that's about 12 car lengths.

The law only applies when plows have their lights on and it does not apply when drivers are passing plows.

Drivers only need to stay 20 feet away when plows are stopped at intersections.
