Community upset as John Ball Zoo begins clearing space for parking

Construction began at the John Ball Zoo this week to make room for additional parking during peak season.

The Kent County Commission Board must approve the master plan of the zoo every 10 years and the 2025 plan has been tabled several times over community efforts to save green space in the city.

Zoo CEO Peter D'Arienzo says they are on track to have 800,000 visitors this year and have had to turn guests away due to limits on parking in the area.

Community members say the zoo is only open part of the year and the additional parking is horrible and unnecessary.
