Peregrine falcon removed from MI endangered species list by DNR

The DNR has removed the peregrine falcon from the endangered species list. They now believe the population has reached a high enough level where the birds can survive on their own.

They were placed on the endangered species list back in the 1940s after widespread use of the pesticide DDT made its way into their systems through the prey they ate. The chemicals caused peregrine eggshells to thin, allowing them to break easily and killing chicks before they had the chance to grow.

The pesticide then became banned in in 1970 through the launch of the U.S Enviromental Protection Agency.
