Drownings in Great Lakes are down from 2022

The number of drownings in the Great Lakes are down from last year, however the danger remains.

The Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project says nine people drowned over the weekend, with six of those incidents taking place in Lake Michigan.

So far this year, 72 drownings have occurred in the lakes with 37 of those occurring in Lake Michigan.

Officials say the decrease could be due to a cool start to summer or a decrease in people going to the beach.
