Commissioners pass begging, item collection ordinance revisions

GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - The Grand Rapids City Commission has passed ordinance changes that will affect the city's homeless population.

The nuisance and disorderly conduct ordinances have been revised to restrict panhandling in areas near ATMs and outdoor dining areas. A second revision allows city employees and police to seize items left in parks and along public right of ways.

Critics say the changes criminalize being homeless, while the business community says the revisions are needed to improve safety.

Previously, the ACLU has called the changes unconstitutional.
