Grand Rapids Public Schools is announcing it will allow backpacks for the 2023-2024 school year.
The district banned backpacks in May after four students brought guns to school over the course of the year.
The district says they do recommend families purchase clear backpacks, however they are not required.
GRPS says they will implement unannounced screenings, school building assessments, more staff training and additional mental health programming.
