Man claims racial profiling in lawsuit against GR, Kentwood police

A man is filing a federal lawsuit after he says he was racially profiled by Grand Rapids and Kentwood police last year.

Johnathan Gafford says he was tailed by police as he left Kentwood to drive to a Grand Rapids hotel on May 28 last year.

Gafford's attorney says his client was following the speed limit in a rental car and did not do anything wrong.

When Gafford arrived at the hotel, he was surrounded by officers with their guns drawn and was detained for almost an hour.

Police said he matched the description of a suspect for a nearby crime.

Gafford was released from custody that night.

The city of Grand Rapids says they have not yet been served with the lawsuit.
