GRAND RAPIDS (WOOD-AM) - John Ball Zoo is trying to get what officials say is the highest green building certification possible for the facility's new pygmy hippo habitat.
The zoo says it's trying to earn Living Building Challenge Petal certification.
"I think we’re all real familiar with LEED building, that's been around for 25 years or so," director of facilities, planning and sustainability Allmon Forrester told WOOD-TV. "What we're doing with this habitat is actually taking it to the next step further up from that."
The habitat is expected to open after Memorial Day.
