This month has been much warmer than usual, causing very little ice to form on the Great Lakes.
Every day in January so far has had temperatures at or above freezing with less than an inch of snow accumulating.
Lake Michigan tends to see maximum ice coverage by the first half of February.
Recent winters have trended toward low ice levels early in the season and rapid ice accumulation toward the end of January.
