Former Muskegon Co. judge candidate 'unintentionally' hit girlfriend

A former candidate for judge in Muskegon County says he did not intend to hit his girlfriend with a belt.

Witnesses recorded a video of 51-year-old Jason Kolkema as he allegedly physically abused his girlfriend in August.

Kolkema pleaded gulity to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge as part of a plea deal on Wednesday.

Kolkema said during a hearing, he swung a belt in her presence and made contact with his girlfriend's arm when she moved it to protect herself.

His girlfriend has defended him saying he was hitting the chair, not her.
