GRFD dive team ready to save lives

The Grand Rapids Fire Department is celebrating the last 20 firefighters finishing their last day of training to become certified in rescue diving today.

Water rescues are not uncommon in the city, with 15 to 20 happening a year in the Grand River.

The city previously relied on the Kent County Sheriff's Department divers, however the team was often too late.

This is Grand Rapids' first ever dive team.

GRPD Captain Joel Boyer says they can now have a diver in the water in less than 10 minutes if they get a good location quickly.
