LANSING (WOOD-AM) - Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson approved her department's statement on the shooting death of Patrick Lyoya, but changed course a few hours later.
The statement, which was published on April 15, condemned Lyoya's death after he was fatally shot by a Grand Rapids Police Department officer, but Benson sent an email to staff that night saying that it violated the department's nonpartisan role and it was inappropriate.
That statement also said her office would "no longer provide the driving record" or personal information of Lyoya.
The officer at the center of the case remains on administrative leave. Any charges against the officer will be determined by the Kent County Prosecutor's Office.
