No charges after deputy fired gun during traffic stop

Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker says no charges will be brought against a sheriff's deputy who fired a gun at the scene of a car crash in March.

Becker says the deputy mistook the sound of a utility pole breaking to be the sound of gunfire.

The deputy and his partner were responding to a car that had crashed into a power pole on 36th Street near Patterson Avenue on March 18.

Becker says the incident was a mistake and it was reasonable for the deputy to respond to what he thought was gunfire.

No one was injured during the incident.
