Kent County Sheriff Michelle LaJoye-Young says a deputy was shot in the hand while attempting to arrest a homicide suspect in Cutlerville.
The incident happened around 2 p.m. on Sunbrook Street SE, near 76TH Street and Eastern Avenue.
LaJoye-Young says deputies were called to the area for a welfare check and found a man dead inside the home they were investigating.
A suspect arrived at the home as detectives were investigating.
As an officer approached the vehicle, they noticed a rifle in the car.
Officials say there was a struggle over the rifle and the suspect fired the gun.
The deputy was taken to the hospital with an injury to the hand.
The suspect is in custody.
