'My bad,' says student charged with taking gun to school

WEST OLIVE, (Mich.) — The West Ottawa High School student arrested with a gun at school offered this response to causing so much fear among his classmates:

"My bad," Davian Weston told 24 Hour News 8 on Friday as he walked out of the Ottawa County Jail.

Weston, 17, of Holland, hugged his mom as he left the jail, released on bond, with a bag of Fritos.

He'd been arraigned earlier in the day on two felonies — receiving and concealing a stolen handgun and carrying a concealed weapon — and a misdemeanor charge of carrying a gun on school property.

If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison.

Ottawa County deputies say at least one other student reported seeing Weston with a gun outside the high school Thursday morning. They believe he had the weapon inside the school earlier in the day.

The report led to a lockdown and anxious moments.

"He does feel bad, but he's not allowed to comment. He doesn't understand all this," his mother, Stacy Puente, said.
