UNDATED, Mich. -- This Mother's Day, Michiganders are expected to contribute to a record-breaking $38 billion in spending across the United States. According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), this year's spending surpasses last year's $34.1 billion and the previous record of $35.7 billion in 2023. Consumers plan to spend an average of $284 per person on gifts.
NRF Chief Economist Mark Mathews noted that despite economic uncertainty, Mother's Day remains a priority for many Americans. "Consumers are gifting from the heart, seeking unique gifts that create lasting memories for the mothers in their lives," Mathews said.
Flowers continue to be the most popular gift, with 75% of shoppers planning to purchase them. Other top gift categories include greeting cards, special outings like dinners or brunches, and gift cards. Jewelry leads in spending at $7.5 billion, followed by special outings at $6.4 billion and electronics at $4.4 billion.
More consumers are planning to buy across almost every gift category, with men budgeting an average of $346 per person compared to women's $225. Millennials are expected to spend the most, often choosing experiential gifts like concerts or sporting events. Consumers across all income groups are increasing their spending, with many opting for discount stores to maximize their budgets.
The NRF survey, conducted from April 1 to April 8, included 7,877 U.S. adult consumers and has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.1 percentage points. For more details on Mother's Day spending trends, visit the NRF's Mother's Day headquarters.
